Why did Neil Diamond stop singing?

Oct 30, 2023

Neil Diamond retired from touring and performing in 2018 at the age of 76, following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, coordination, and balance. It can also cause tremors and muscle stiffness.

Diamond’s Parkinson’s diagnosis made it difficult for him to sing and perform at the level he expected of himself. He said in a statement at the time of his retirement that he was “disappointed” to have to end his touring career, but that he wanted to focus on his health and well-being.

Despite his retirement from touring, Diamond’s music continues to be enjoyed by fans all over the world. In 2022, a new Broadway musical about his life called A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical premiered. The musical stars American Idol Winner Nick Fradiani as ‘Neil Diamond-Then’ and Mark Jacoby as ‘Neil Diamond-Now’ and tells the story of his rise from humble beginnings in Brooklyn to international superstardom.
